Revue of Money Monster

Initial Release Date:  April 6, 2016
Genre: Drama and almost a reality show
Directed By: Jodie Foster

George Clooney is cocky Lee Gates, the host of a television show called Money Monster where he picks the hottest stocks on the market. What started out as a usual day at the office turns into a hostage situation when Lee is taken hostage on live TV by Kyle Buckwell (Jack O’Connel) who is upset because he has lost all his money relying on one of Lee’s tips. Julia Roberts (Patty Fenn) is Lee’s producer talking him through the tight situation on his ear piece.

Step aside new generation actors whose more concern is six packs and see the old masters at work. Clooney and Julia showed us why they have been around this long with no signs of slowing down. They both gave a sterling performance interpreting their roles with finesse.

I have to say, Jodie Foster is getting better at making movies. I think this is her fourth attempt and she did pretty well. The plot of the movie also deserves commendation, the twists were quite unpredictable; one moment the movie seemed like a comedy, suddenly it becomes an intense thriller and then a reality TV show. The conflict resolution was impressive too.

One thing I found intriguing in the movie was how in the midst of the hostage crisis Clooney and Julia’s characters still had an eye on maximizing viewership. It’s indicative of the society we live today, where all we can think of his how to make money off peoples misfortunes. And after one trending matter is over, we move on to the next one. No one cares about people or society.

Money Monster makes for good entertainment and I did like the retro feel to the movie which gave it a unique flavor. So it earns 7.8/ 10 on my awesome-o-meter.

I really appreciate all the feedback on social media and emails, so keep it coming on Twitter: @ThaRevue, Facebook: @ThaRevue or on Instagram: tharevue

Have fun.
