When I saw the trailer of this movie sometime back, I was quite enthralled and curious to see how they planned to shoot a whole movie from the first person perspective (POV). So in keeping with the POV narrative, my revue of Hardcore Henry is going to be from the first person perspective. So here goes.
I just woke up in a laboratory with a couple of scientists with no recollection of how I got there and I don’t even know my own name. The first thing I see is a beautiful woman called Estelle who tells me that my name is Henry and she is my wife. I immediately notice that I am a man/machine hybrid because I was in some bad accident and the only way to save me was to put some mechanical parts in me and patch me up.
Just as Estelle and scientists are about to install my voice box, some random guy called Akan (Danila Kozlovsky) who seems to have some kind of telekinetic powers barges in with his armed goons and kidnaps my wife. Now I must utilize the fighting abilities which my wife tells me I have have to rescue her and stop Akan from his mission to destroy the world. In my mission, I have no one to trust but some guy called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley) who I am beginning to think is a clone because I seem to see him everywhere I go. That's how I went on a shooting and killing extravaganza without saying a word.
Maybe it’s too much POV porn or video gaming that drove the makers to shoot an entire movie with a GoPro cam, but it turned out to be quite a cinematic experience. I have not seen this amount of stabbing, bone crunching, head splitting, gut spilling, neck twisting in a long time, and seeing it from the first person kinda brings a new perspective to it (pun intended). This style may open a new vista to movie making…or not. I admit after a while I got tired of it but just when I am about to get bored, another action sequence begins.
Hardcore Henry is an unconventional action packed wild ride of a movie and was very enjoyable probably due to its unconventional visual style and it earns a 6.9/ 10 on my awesome-o-meter.
