Revue of Criminal

Release Date; April 14, 2016
Genre: Action Sci Fi/Crime
Directed By: Ariel Vromen

When William Pope (Ryan Reynolds) a CIA operative gets killed in pursuit of “The Dutchman” a hacker who has access to launch codes, the CIA  have to figure out how to stop the access codes from getting to the Russians. They enlist a neurosurgeon (Tommy Lee Jones) to stick Bill’s memory into a compatible host who happens to be a violent criminal named Jerico (Kevin Costner) to help them track down the Dutchman.

Why does this storyline sound familiar? Hmmmm *scratches head*, maybe because it is the exact story line with a movie called Selfless!! Truthfully, I have a serious itch for some good ol’ Sci-Fi for a while and I thought maybe this was gonna be it, what with a cast that includes like Gary Oldman, Gal Gadot and Jordi Molla. Unfortunately, this wasn’t it.

Ignoring the clichéd storyline, and the underwhelming and ultra-predictable climax, I was really impressed with Costner’s performance. I could not imagine him being such a cold hearted and violent villain but he did a great job of it.  And his performance was basically the highlight of the whole show. For some strange reason, I kept expecting Scott Adkins to take off his shirt and pull off some karate on someone but nope, it never happened. Tommy Lee Jones and Ryan Reynolds may have as well just been extras because they truly did nothing in the movie.

Sometimes when I watch these kind of movies like Transcendent and Source Code,  it gets me thinking if electrical pulses really all that makes us human. Are we just a residue of memories, behaviors and skill-sets? Is that all that makes us human? but I digress.

Criminalhad potential to be a pretty decent movie but it fades off just as it was about to get going.  It earns a 5.4/10 rating on my awesome-o-meter and is relegated to the almost good movies in my  books.
